Failed drugged tests are certainly nothing new in the world of combat sports. For as long as sports have been around, many athletes have tried to take shortcuts to get to the top.
But recently, especially inside MMA’s largest promotion, the UFC, it seems as though failed drug tests are reaching an all time high. Perhaps that is because the names at the absolute top of the sport are the ones failing the tests.
Last month we had Jon Jones testing positive for cocaine before his fight with Daniel Cormier. Just as things seemed to be settling down a little following that fiasco, BOTH fighters in the most recent UFC main event failed drug tests.
Anderson Silva, arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history, failed a pre-fight test for steroids. Furthermore, that test was administered way back on Jan. 9, leaving many to wonder why he was even allowed to fight.
His opponent, to the surprise of nobody, failed a post fight test for marijuana. Given his past, it would probably have been more surprising if he had actually passed the test.
We spoke to Amer Abdallah to get his thoughts on the failed tests, and how it will affect the UFC in particular, and combat sports in general.
